Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Services

About Our Endoscopy Service

Phoenix Health Solutions Ltd provides endoscopy services from White Rose Surgery.

Our aim is to provide patients with a safe, effective and person-centred service in a welcoming environment. We provide clear information to help patients and their carers understand their procedure, prepare appropriately and make informed decisions about their care.

Phoenix Health Solutions operates as a single-site endoscopy service. Endoscopy procedures are undertaken at White Rose Surgery.

Endoscopy Procedures We Provide

Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)

A Endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person's digestive tract. During an upper endoscopy, an endoscope is easily passed through the mouth and throat and into the oesophagus, allowing the doctor to view the oesophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine.

Colonoscopy

colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure in which the inside of the large intestine (colon and rectum) is examined. A colonoscopy is commonly used to evaluate gastrointestinal symptoms, such as rectal and intestinal bleeding, or changes in bowel habits.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to investigate problems with your lower bowel or rectum, including pain, bleeding or inflammation. A sigmoidoscopy can also be used to diagnose bowel cancer, or to remove non-cancerous growths, called polyps, from your bowel.

Patients receive procedure-specific information explaining why the procedure may be required, how to prepare, what will happen during the procedure, available options for comfort and sedation where applicable, potential benefits and risks, and what to expect afterwards.

Please use the links below to access procedure information and bowel preparation instructions.

Information is available electronically and can also be provided in paper format.

Please contact us if you require assistance accessing or understanding any of our patient information.

Referrals to Our Service

Patients are referred to Phoenix Health Solutions through the Single Point of Access referral pathway via Mid Yorkshire Hospitals.

Phoenix Health Solutions Ltd works collaboratively with Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust and other relevant healthcare providers as part of the wider local gastroenterology and endoscopy pathway.

Referrals are reviewed to ensure that the patient's clinical needs are appropriate for the services available at Phoenix Health Solutions.

Our NHS Endoscopy service is performed by multiple consultants supported by a dedicated nursing team.

Referral to Other Healthcare Services

Some patients may require investigations, treatment or specialist care that is not provided at Phoenix Health Solutions.

Where clinically appropriate, patients may therefore be referred or directed to another healthcare organisation for services such as:

  • specialist or complex endoscopy procedures;
  • additional diagnostic investigations;
  • specialist gastroenterology or secondary care assessment;
  • treatment requiring hospital-based facilities; or
  • urgent or emergency assessment and treatment.

Where an onward referral is required, the reason and proposed next steps will be explained to the patient.

Insourcing and Outsourcing Arrangements

Phoenix Health Solutions Ltd does not currently use an insourcing provider to deliver endoscopy procedures at Phoenix Health Solutions.

Where a patient's clinical needs require care that cannot appropriately be provided by our service, onward referral arrangements are made through the relevant healthcare pathway.

Before your procedure

Patients receive information before their appointment to help them prepare safely for their procedure.

Depending upon the procedure, this may include information about:

  • preparation for the procedure;
  • bowel preparation where required;
  • eating and drinking instructions;
  • medicines and any changes that may be required before the procedure;
  • sedation and other comfort options;
  • arrangements for travelling home following sedation;
  • consent;
  • benefits, risks and alternatives to the procedure; and
  • what to bring to the appointment.

Please read the information provided to you carefully before attending.

If you are unsure about any aspect of your preparation or procedure, please contact the service using the contact details provided with your appointment information.

On being referred to us for the gastroenterology service you will be contacted by our friendly staff to arrange a convenient appointment usually within a few weeks of the referral. Please be aware your first initial appointment with the gastroenterologist will be an telephone consultation.

At your initial consultation you will be assessed by either Dr Agrawal (consultant gastroenterologist, Mr Yeluri (consultant upper GI surgeon) or Mr Khetan (consultant colorectal surgeon). You can ask any questions around your care during this appointment. Your initial appointment includes a full assessment and may include an intimate examination. Your appointment takes approximately 15 minutes. You may be required to have further investigations which the consultant will discuss with you. If an endoscopy procedure is required this will be discussed in detail and if bowel preparation is required this will also be discussed in detail.

Following the appointment you will be given a date for your procedure. Your bowel preparation will be posted out to you and all the relevant information leaflets.

Consent and Making an Informed Decision

We want patients to understand the procedure they have been referred for and to have an opportunity to ask questions.

Before proceeding, the healthcare professional will discuss the procedure with you, including its purpose, expected benefits, significant risks and any appropriate alternatives.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions before providing consent.

On the day of your procedure

Your procedure will be performed by one of the consultants in our endoscopy suite.

On arrival please check in with our reception staff and then one of our nursing staff will support you through our pre-admission process. Prior to your procedure nursing staff will take your blood pressure and do vital observations. If you are having a flexible sigmoidoscopy an enema will be administered.

You will then be seen by the consultant, prior to your procedure, and you can ask any questions related to the procedure. The consultant will then discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure and you will sign the consent form with the consultant.

You will then be taken to the endoscopy suite for the procedure which usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on which procedure you are having.

After the procedure you will be given post procedure instructions regarding after care advice. You will also be given a copy of your endoscopy report. A contact number is also provided for if you have any concerns.

If you do have any concerns or problems after the procedure please contact the surgery and speak to a member of our admin or healthcare team so that arrangements can be made for you to be seen immediately.

After Your Procedure

Following your procedure, you will receive appropriate aftercare and discharge information.

This may include:

  • what to expect following the procedure;
  • eating and drinking advice;
  • medication advice where relevant;
  • restrictions following sedation;
  • symptoms to look out for;
  • when and how to seek medical advice;
  • information about results and follow-up arrangements; and
  • relevant contact information.

Patients who receive sedation must follow the specific discharge instructions provided by the clinical team.

You will be seen at Phoenix Health Solutions for further follow up if required or if you have had a biopsy taken for your results approximately 6-8 weeks post procedure.
